General Information This site describes the various types of silica produced by Insilco Ltd. and their main application fields.
All data indicated in this site represents typical values and not specifications.
Degussa’s Commitment To Silica And To India Degussa AG of Germany, the world’s largest producer of silica, has developed an extensive range of grades for different applications with highly sophisticated manufacturing methods.
Silica production sites of the Degussa Group are situated in the Federal Republic of Germany, USA, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand besides two states in India.
Degussa has brought the most modern spray drying techniques to India, to supply existing and potential users in India with ultimate quality spray dried silica.
Insilco plant at Gajraula has an in-house production facility for sodium silicate (a critical intermediate product) ensuring tight control on quality of basic raw material inputs.
Highly qualified technicians operate both these plants, which have complete automation and are equipped with latest electronic controls like Distributed Control System (DCS). The Quality assurance & application laboratories at Insilco plants are state-of-the-art equipped with latest sophisticated equipments.
Insilco's Product Quality Insilco procures its raw materials from the best known sources. There are stringent checks on quality of incoming raw materials, in-process materials and finished products. The quality is monitored using statistical process control with the help of specially designed computer software. In addition, there are regular quality cross checks of Insilco’s products with other Degussa group silica plants. As a result, Insilco’s products are highly consistent and give a uniform process behaviour and end product performance.

Degussa’s teams conduct Plant / Quality / Commercial audits of Insilco’s operations regularly.
Degussa production experts and engineers also visit Insilco plants periodically for providing the required guidance and support in technology or developing new applications like use of silica in food.
Synthetic Silica The production of precipitated silica by the spray drying process begins with the reaction of sodium silicate solution with mineral acid. After filtration and washing, the resulting cake is spray dried. Precipitated silica produced by spray drying process are of very high purity. Therefore, they fulfil the strict specifications of the WHO and various pharmacopoeias. These are also known as synthetic amorphous silicon dioxide or synthetic amorphous silica.
General Storage Conditions To ensure that product properties and application behaviour remain unchanged, our all grades of precipitated silica ought to be stored in closed, dry premises and protected against exposure to volatile substances. Strict observance of optimum storage conditions ensure a prolonged usability. Nevertheless we recommend that this storage period should not exceed for more than one year.
Handling Instructions The use of local exhaust system at the work place is recommended when handling silica in powder form. If the occupational exposure limit (TLV as per Indian regulations) of 10 mg silica for every 8 hrs working ref. to total dust, is exceeded, a dust mask should be worn (Grade-3M-8710N anti dust mask according to Indian regulations.)
Electrostatic charge may build up while working with silica. Handling and processing equipment should therefore be grounded.
In order to eliminate the feeling of dryness after the contact of silica with the skin, the product should be washed off with water and cream applied to the skin.
Spilled material should be swept together, taking care not to create dust and collected in a suitable container. Silica can be disposed off like household waste.
